Each of the “big three” Internet providers in Canada offers security software for your laptop or desktop computer. An unprotected computer connected to the Internet can be infected in just 5 minutes – according to Microsoft – don’t let it be yours.

Install security software, including Virus and Internet Protection on a new or rebuilt computer as soon as possible. Cleaning up from an infection is time consuming and potentially costly.

The good news is; as a Shaw, Telus, or Rogers customer, they will give you security software free of charge!

Note: Before installing any of these free security software programs it is important that you uninstall any security software you may currently have. There’s no benefit to running both, and in fact they will fight each other and slow down your computer.

Free Internet Protection Shaw

Shaw internet security is part of the Shaw mail POP3 service. Shaw offers protection via their Shaw Secure(tm) internet security package, which appears to be a re-branded version of F-Secure.
Shaw Secure includes:

  • Internet Firewall
  • Virus and Spy protection
  • Spam control
  • Identity Theft
  • Parental controls

Shaw Secure requires Windows XP, 2000, Vista, or 7, 1Gb RAM, and 800Mb of free disk space. They even have a link where you can test your system to make sure it qualifies. Shaw Secure does not support Mac’s at this time.

Download Shaw Secure virus protection to your local computer and run the install. If you are using their Shaw Webmail then there is no need to download this product.

Telus’ security software is their antivirus protection package is called eProtect(tm). You’ll need to select your Province and your Internet type before you can download, and then accept their license agreement.
Telus eProtect includes:

  • Firewall
  • Antivirus
  • AdBlock, Anti-Spyware

Also: * Don’t use Telus Actiontec V1000H modem

You can download Telus eProtect and view their FAQ if you need assistance. Telus eProtect security software is free with High Speed, High Speed Enhanced, High Speed Extreme and currently works with Windows XP and Vista. Support for Windows 7 is available but I’ve had issues with the install in the past.

Rogers virus protection now comes in two levels; basic and premium. Basic protection is free and the link is included below. This software includes:

  • Antivirus
  • Firewall
  • Parental Control
  • Anti-Spyware
  • up to 3 comptuers

You can download Rogers’ Online Protection (Basic) and view the FAQ.

Q. What if I’m not with one of these three Internet providers?

A. There are many virus and firewall products out there right now. Try  NORTON 360 3.0 1 USER for 3 PC’s ESD

Securing your computer is imperative these days. If you can, save yourself a bit of money and use the free software provided by your Internet provider.

Maybe the Shaw program is garbage I can’t speak to that but I do know that Rogers security is just a re-branded Norton Internet Securities and I think even Sympatico’s is McAfee or something like that. So I just wanted to correct the original reply to this article. I mean – what’s the point of paying for Norton AV if you’re paying Rogers for your Internet when you get it free (albeit rebranded)?

These free anti-virus programs are all complete garbage. I worked in a computer repair shop and half of my time was spent removing these programs as they caused horrible effects on the customers pc’s especially shaw secure which is infact not a program owned by shaw but rather a contract based program created in norway i believe they can cause blue screens slow the system down horribly and in the end not even remove virus’s properly take my advice use avg you’ll save yourself hundreds of dollars down the line and save you a big big headache the average cost of dealing with a computer with shaw secure or telus anti-virus is roughly about 140 dollars canadian
