Bill C-11 Canada’s SOPA

If you followed the now delayed SOPA Piracy Bill in the US, (our review) then you should also know about Bill C-11 here in Canada.
Amendments are being proposed to Bill C-11 that would introduct SOPA like wordings and control. the Huffington Post has an interesting article this morning about it:

With Bill C-11 back on the legislative agenda at the end of the month, Canada will be a prime target for SOPA style rules. In fact, a close review of the unpublished submissions to the Bill C-32 legislative committee reveals that several groups have laid the groundwork to add SOPA-like rules into Bill C-11, including blocking websites and expanding the “enabler provision” to target a wider range of websites.

Zappos Shoes Hacked

Online shoe seller Zappos.com says a hacker may have accessed the personal information of up to 24 million customers.

Zappos is an Amazon company and the hack does not include credit card and payment information. However names, phone numbers, email addresses, billing and shipping addresses, the last four digits from credit cards and more may have been accessed in the attack.

Zappos Chief Executive Tony Hsieh alerted employees and customers of the cyber-attack in an email on Sunday that is posted on the company’s website.

Zappos is contacting customers by email and urging them to change their passwords.

Zappos said the hacker gained access to its internal network and systems through one of the company’s servers in Kentucky. Zappos is based in Las Vegas.

A Security Breach costs $38,000 On Average

Your American Express card has been limited

Do not open and run the web form attached to this email.

I received the following email with an attachement named “form.html“. It pretends that it is from American Express however a review of the attached web form shows that it points back to http://www.76tbike.com/ipdata/online.americanexpress.com.php. Forget about the stuff on the end which tries to make this look like it came from American Express, the domain name showing is www.76tbike.com – definitely NOT American Express. (more…)

File Sharing sites found to be unsafe

Researchers from Belgium and France have discovered that “a significant percentage” of the top 100 file sharing sites allow unauthorized access.

File sharing sites sites such RapidShareFileFactory, and Easyshare, provide file sharing by using supposedly random secret URL’s for the share page that cannot be guessed. It has been proven, however, that in fact you can guess the share page. (more…)

Domain Registration Scam

I received this email scam this morning which at first glance looks like a domain registration renewal advisory. It’s not.

Let’s take a moment and and understand some basic security checks you can do when you’re not sure about an incoming email. These are quick easy things – they won’t take much time and you’ll quickly know if the email is legitimate.
